| The changeover was made in 1975 due to Federal regulation, calling for all shifting to be on the same side, i.e.,leftside on motorcycles manufactured after that year. Harley started with the shifter shaft still coming out the timing cover (on the rightside) and then ran linkage thru the frame to connect with the shift lever on the primary side. It was a pile of garbage, serving no purpose, other than to meet the Feds dictate. I also own a 1971 XLCH, bought it 30 years ago. Ride it every day. Now, I have to ask, why in the world would you want to tarnish such a fine machine by putting garbage like that on it? Maybe you are a newby who has never ridden anything before that shifts on the right? Forget about doing the changeover. You could never find the parts needed to do it anyway. |
