Honda st70 screeching when throttle applied!

Hi i have a honda st70 and it was running fine until one day i was going along in second gear and just as i was going to change gear it screeched very loudly. So i turned it off straight away. A few days later i started it up and it was still doing it. It was getting oil up in the cylinder head, but when we opened the tappet covers and put some oil down it and it has been quiet since. I have not ridden it yet because i am not sure what the problem is. If anyone knows can you please help me? thanks
