You can shift into 2nd at 12 mph, up to as high as 25mph, but you can pull from 0 to max speed in 2nd gear, and all it costs you is a little extra burned gas, and you may get passed by a few cars. Downshifting is suggested at 3 MPH, although how you are supposed to tell you are at that speed is not explained. I suggest you do it sooner rather than later, as it will hang up in first at higher RPM, and it could be (slightly) embarassing if someone is watching/listening.

I just release the throttle at about 15-20 mph, and upshift and get back on the throttle.
