It does not have a CVT tranny like a scooter. It will not stall out in first gear. I generally upshift at 15-20 mph, but it will go into second at a dead stop, and pull from that stop to max speed. This is not reccomended as it costs you gas mileage.
The only reason you NEED to shift into neutral is prevent the side stand interlock from shutting of the engine.
