I have a ´78 that I rebuilt last summer. Repainted and completely went through the engine due to a knock that was a failing camshaft. This is very unusual for these guys. What is also unusual is that they really, really like to rev above 3500. I have pushed mine all the way to redline, and a little above by accident, and it always seems to want to keep pulling. I have easily kept up with a friends 650 and another´s 800, but not from a start. These bikes do not give you a real rush off the line, but get it up into its power band above 3500 and it will give you a run for the money. What is really interesting about this is that it is a pushrod engine. Simply amazing. One thing you guys need to stay on top of is the cam chain though. Make sure it is adjusted regularly. Look it up on the web or look in a service manual and DO IT. Takes about 15 minutes and will save you from trashing the engine. The cam chain, if allowed to stretch, will eat all the way through an internal bolt, showering metal shavings in the oil and they go straight for the rod bearings. Re: dual disks. never happened in the US on the ´78. Also, the ´78 had a funky carb with no accelerator pump. If you can, it is worth your time to change over to an 80 or later set of carbs. Really improves the bottom end to have that little squirt of gas. |
