I´ve had a black ´78 since ´98, paid $800cdn., with no regrets. When I first bought it, it had no compression, and the fuel system was full of green crap. Whoever owned it before me tried to resurface the heads, with what appears to be a belt sander. The mating surfaces were out of flat by at least .100"! This required corrective action, and by the time enough material was removed to get them flat, the compression had skyrocketted, resulting in the need for 94 octane. This combined with a modification to the centrifugal advance mech. punched horsepower over 100BHP! (not to mention rejetting & match porting.) The only problem now is the wimpy clutch. It just doesn´t hold the torque. Even upgraded to Barnett with no success. The next thing I want to try is beefier clutch springs. It may increase clutch pull, but at least I will be able to get the power to the pavement. If you have any questions regarding your ´78, ask away. There´s a good chance I can help you. Sincerely, Bike Maker.
