Winning Z1 R I won a Z1 R in a Blue Stratos Aftershave competition in 1978. I toured through Europe and into Poland to meet some relatives. In Poland they had seen nothing like it and there were literally crowds of hundreds gathered round the bike whenever I stopped. I stopped at the side of a road and a guy stopped and took a full roll of film of the bike. Four bikers went past then turned round and came back to look. They were riding cafe racer CZ´s and they were all deaf and dumb. They asked me about the bike in sign language. The Z1 R was a great tourer, expecially if fitted with the bigger tank. It handled better than its reputation and I had no trouble seeing off Suzuki GS 1000´s on bends. The aftermarket box section swinging arm and Konis helped a lot. I never liked the seat though, it was a bit of a slab. I fitted an Eddie Lawson stepped seat and it transformed the comfort. Felt like you were sitting in the bike rather than on it. I eventually swapped the bike for a BMW RS100; a great mistake. The BMW was so boring I sold it and actually gave up biking for a few years. I´ve currently got a Royal Enfield Bullet which is great on country back roads but very slow on motorways. Also just bought a 1976 Honda 550 Sport in lovely condition which I am hoping will remind me of the Z1 R but a bit lighter. Happy biking, Mazza. |
