I just bought a ´78 Suzuki GS 550 E. Today, i blew one of the two main fuses (15 Amp)seven times!!! (the first one and six replacements) The first 4 times, the ignition switched on ok, but as soon as I pressed the starter switch, the fuse blew. The 5th time i used the kick start so as to eliminate the starter circuit as a problem, and the fuse blew just from the engine turning over on the kickstarter. I disconnected the regulator from the alternator (i disconnected the black and yellow wire with an O-washer type end from the alternator mounting bolt. This seemed to cure the problem - i started the motor about 6 times with no problem. Then I disconnected the regulator completely (ie. 4 more wires connected to other wires in the harness) so i could take it in for replacement. Then with the regulator completely out, the fuse started blowing again - twice more - this time merely when turning the ignition key to on, not even turning the engine over. I´m completely stumped - i am not even sure what the fuse is for. Do u have any idea what the problem is, and is it dangerous to the electrics to keep turning the ignition on with the regulator out. I would really appreciate some advice. thank you
