I,ve had my SR since new in 1978 so have had lots of practice. First foget about the cute but useless indicator in the left side cam end for top dead centre. Simply do this: ensure key on, petrol etc and choke if cold - slowly turn engine over until compression felt, pull in valve lifter and lower kick till piston over TDC, release lifter, return kick to top, depress kick lever fully down. Do not use throttle. If in good tune it will start on the choke. If no start repeat process. When started open throttle slowly or accellerator pump will flood the engine to death - then you have a problem. When hot do not use choke and again go easy on throttle. The throttle control is the key. I have disabled the pump mechanism and don´t notice any lack of performance. If you flood it (say won´t start after 3 or 4 kicks)leave key on, twist throttle wide open, pull in valve lifter and kick a half dozen time (it is likely to backfire) - start over with normal procedure. I don´t bother with the hot start button either. The SR is actually a good starter - except when it stalls at the traffic lights when the difficulty is exponentially proportional to the number of cars waiting for you to move. Because the SR vibrates do much it can be hell on the stator coils and they degrade over time giving a weak spark and making starting difficult. I have had the stator on my bike rewound twice in 61,000 km (say 40,000 miles) cheers |
