XLCH Kickstand Problem

I just got a 1977 XLCH project. It has a Kickstand, but the darn thing swings out sideways (level with the ground), rather than pointing toward the ground. Nothing appears bent and I am wondering if anyone else has seen this problem? Do I have the wrong kickstand? Thanks in advance,
