Overheating

Hi,
I recently bought a 1986 FJ1200. The engine run well at ideal temperature but I have poor idle when cold and when I run in the city, the motor seems to overheat and begin to knock (like too much timing advance). The idle sometimes begin to vary, or the engine stop and is difficult to start. Any idea where to look first ?

Thanks and excuse my english,

Benoit
