Hi Monty, I had the same problem with my 1998 XV1100 - after checking every thing and spending many hours taking things apart and finding no fault, I happened to notice that the starter button was not returning (fully out). When I flicked it and it returned to it´s proper position it all worked. What happens is when you use the starter (press it in to start the motor) it disconnects all lights and does not reconnect them until it fully returns. Check it out and I am sure you will find that that is what the problem is - simple but very hard to find! I found it purely by accident. The button has stuck in a couple of times since, I just flick the starter button and all works again. Good luck, Jim |
