Hi there!
Here in Germany it´s sometimes similar, but not that harsh, if you just go for it!
If you are already experienced in biking, I´d say you should go for something in the middle range - something like a 600 bike!
They are pretty strong fellows, but still not to big a jump!

Actually I stay with these bikes - I have a KLR 650 Tengai (which I rode in Australia either - it´s an excellent bike - even for light to medium offroad (not motocross) - when you are big enough to reach the ground) and a Honda Revere NTV 650 - excellent naked-road-bike, suitable for anything from cruising to corner-hunting.

Go in a shop, tell them you want a bike to suit you and start with - "If it is a 250 shadow you want to sell me, you´d better tell me first and stop wasting my time!"
Then tell them what you think (like. a 600 street bike with around 50 hp - or whatever you want).

I´d reckon it´s to much to go for a 1200cc unless you can trust yourself to be absolutely controlled for the first half year!
...and as you are a motorbiker I wouldn´t bet a penny ;-)

Don´t neccesarily take a new one, when you are already peeping at a bigger bike - take a used one as someone already said, sell it when you feel like grown out of it and buy what you where looking for!

I´ll stick to my bikes - "burning" (as we call it in German) male bikers away (meaning to be just faster, better and deeper down in corners) with less good (not as powerful) bikes makes a hell lot more fun - especially with their very surprised faces when you pull down your helmet ;-)

Greetings Mel...
