You open a can of worms. I believe that anyone´s first bike should be a used bike. I have found that women riders can be more concerned with dropping the bike in the driveway etc.. (I did not say crashing on the road.) That takes away from just enjoying cycling and learning. **** happens, so don´t be afraid to scratch a beater. Ride for a year or two, and then buy a new one. Too often women riders get a sportster or some 250cc bike that their "SO" picks for them. My wife laughs everytime she passes some girl riding shadow to her "man" on his road king while she suffers on an 883 vibrator. Buy a bike that suits the type of riding that you want to do. My wife rides faster, and with better bike control, than most male riders that we know. Don´t be pushed onto a buell blast when you could have a "blast" on an SV650. Here are 5 good bikes (I will keep focus on bikes that are more suitable for smaller inseams, and you won´t outgrow after your first year): Used starter bikes: 1. Kawasaki EX500/Ninja 500 (light bike. great bike that you can grow with) 2. Suzuki SV 650 (this could be the only bike you will own. Makes 70 hp, but you don´t have to rev it up if you don´t want to use the power.) 3. Ducati Monster (my wife has a 750. The maintenance is a myth that "your knowlegable bike friend" will scare you with. Many jap bikes have valve adjustment intervals at 6K mi. You can find monsters on e-bay for very reasonable prices. Stick to a post 1999, so you can get the fuel injection.) 4. Yamaha 650 cruiser (nice size and power. looks good too.) 5. Suzuki 800 intruder (A friend´s wife has one. It is a noce bike that he often "borrows") New Bike Bonus - Moto Guzzi 750 Breva (looks great - bullet proof motor. This was used in the mid 80´s nevada crusers.) |
