| NEED HELP with VIARGO 535 ´drowning´ at high rpms in every gear. The following is conversation between my friend Steve and brother in Canada. I live in Honduras Central America Steve and Gary: I just got a 1996 Yamaha Viargo 535. It rides really nice. I had the clutch changed today and all around tune up. After taking it from the Yamaha dealership repair shop (They have only seem 3 Viargos in Honduras!) I noticed that the bike still ´drowns ´ at high rpms in every gear. After taking it from the dealership repair shop I noticed that the bike still ´drowns ´ at high rpms in every gear. I brought it back to the shop immediately and they said it must be ‘high throttle’ air screw adjustment needs. They then drilled out the ‘metal caps’ that hid the 2 ´high throttle´ air screws. The ´high throttle air screw´ on the right side (of the photo) finally loosened up and the mechanic opened the screw 2 full turns. This one adjustment on one carburator did not seem to make any improvement. The air screw on the left side is still stuck and I have it soaking in penetrating fluid. Can you give me you professional opinion on the problem I described, opinion the repair shop’s evaluation of the problem and what you think/know are the various things that can cause the problem and what may I be able to do to correct the problem? Thanks Lorne. Hey Lorne, Did they replace your fuel filter? Sounds like the engine is starving for fuel. Does it do it only at high rpms, or also full throttle under load? What your mechanic is doing is monkeying around with the mixture. Generally, one is for idle, the other maybe for operating range. Unscrewing generally makes things richer. If it´s like a car, there is one screw and it only does idle mixture. The jets inside do the rest for normal operation. Not much help. Never worked on a motorcycle engine :) Steve Lorne, Your friend is absolutely right! It is a fuel supply problem. If your motorcycle runs fine except for high RPM, it is a fuel starvation problem. Reverse the things that your idiot mechanic did; and clean the fuel filter, which is in the fuel cock. Drain the tank. Remove the fuel cock. Clean the plastic fuel filters (1 for main & 1 for reserve). Make sure that you have full flow through the gas cock before reinstalling. That should fix the problem. If not, let me know; not the idiot mechanic. Gary. |
