Bruce: I have a couple of 1996 Thunderbirds and experienced the same smoke on start up with one of them. It seems that the problem was in the seat and needle in one of the carbs. This bike had sat almost unused by the previous owner for 5 years. The seat did not seal completely and allowed gas to migrate into the cylinder. This can be a very serious problem if a hydrualic lock sets up when starting from cold. The fix is easy and not expensive. Otherwise, my experience with the motorcycles is outstanding. Over 20,000 miles of excellent performance. Also, check the breather line. If this is clogged, the machine will smoke on start up.
