I just found this forum and because of your question I joined. These are truly awesome bikes, they are not typical in construction by any means. For better or worse however, you would be hard pressed to find a more worthy machine to invest your time and money into. I know this is an old post, and I hope you have been riding a while. As far as upkeep goes my T-bird was down for 5 years before I bought it (3rd owner now) it has 35k miles on it (200+) by me thus far. There is a flaw in the carb float assy design, its all plastic and o-ringed... youll spend 150.00 replacing the set of 3 (more if you have problems with the slides sticking (not retracting under vacuum load) and bowl gaskets but the main fault I´ve found is that the intake boots will dry-rot if not looked after, (belt dressing works wonders if you tend to the issue early). Another note of caution is the valve covers will leak if the retaining bolt seals fail (over torquing and under torquing will cause them to loose their seal and yet further more, if you over tighten the valve cover bolt you risk having to replace the cam pad and pray to God your allen wrench dosnt strip out the bolt heads that retain said cam pad. I thought I was in a situation where I´d have to replace a pad and discovered Triumph dosent sell just these cam pad yould have to replace the entire head to get a new cam pad, or opt to re-drill, tap, and install. That being said, treat every piece of hardware as if it were made of 24kt gold and youll understand what I mean when I say, \ |
