| I purchased an FXRT new in 1988, and have 125,000 miles on it at this time. The bike has been very reliable, and never has left me stranded. I perform as much maintenance as I perform personally. I have used Mobil 1 15W50 since I had 40,000 miles on it. I have tried the Mobil oil for V-twins, but noticed no benefit except for the higher price. I can get the synthetic 15W50 at any WalMart while touring around the country. Currently I used Mobil MX4T for the primary chain lube, and Bel Ray in the transmission. At 75,000 miles, I had the motor rebuilt. The motor used some oil, and I thought a few ponies could be added by the rebuild. The motor has been ported and the heads shaved to obtain a 9:1 compression. I installed an S&S carburetor, and punched out the stock pipes. I had baloney turn outs, but they were too loud on long trips. I´ve had "pig tails" installed on the cyclinder head oil returns, which eliminated base gasket leaks, installed a crank vent (i.e. check value for the crankcase) to reduce oil blown out the breather, installed metal rocket box gaskets to eliminate the paper gaskets drying out over the exhaust ports, and installed a Screamin´ Eagle Adjustable Ignition Module to aid in reducing ping. The most important thing I´ve put on is an oil cooler with a thermostat, which I hid under the bike on the frame cross members. No detonation on hot days,or running at 80 MPH on the interstate. My bike has dual front brakes, but I have had floating rotors installed, and I installed braided brake lines to help stopping the sled. I still have the original calipers, which are single piston type. The bike puts out 80 peak HP at 4500 RPM, and is fun to drive. It is a very nimble bike, which can be ridden hard into corners without bottoming out. I wish Harley would update the bike with the new Revolution motor (i.e. VRod motor). I hope this information is not too much, but I think the RT´s Rock! |
