I got my FXRT in ´99. In the ten years I´ve had it, I´ve had so many problems to fix, that I may qualify as a Harley mechanic. Even if I caused half of them, there´s still too many to call the machine reliable in any sense of the word. However, after two skilled mechanics worked on it, I got to visit Sturgis twice and found out what motorcycling is really about. Of three visits to Las Vegas from my home south of San Jose, I´ve only had to truck the beast home once. Of course, Las Vegas Harley offerred to change out the engine. Not knowing what was in store, I should have let them do it. I´d have saved money. I guess it´s the $100/hr mechanics I object to. Most of the work I can now do myself in about the time it takes them. Yes, flat rate. But what a shame to have so many problems with what is likely the worlds most beautiful Harley... Best looking bike I ever owned was a 1987 Yamaha Venture Royale. But where Harley uses a thumb screw for throttle control, Yamaha used a genuine $300 cruise control. I didn´t care enough about the bike to go thru the learning curve I´ve gone thru on the Harley. Reliable or not, Harley´s are special.
