Although the gixxer family has grown more stylish, powerful, and lighter over the years, the grampa gixxers (like the 88´) still packed quite a punch for their time. The balbous looking cowling pieces take away the sporty looking edge of the machine but do not hinder it´s surprisingly good performance. The old gixxer maintains the high speed stability Suzuki sportbikes are known for even at speeds approaching 150mph. When slowing down from those top end runs the binders are right there to provide strong stopping power that is impressively responsive when hard braking is required. The funnest part about this machine is what me and my buddy called the ´slingshot zone´ ( named after the model that year), or the 8-11,000 rpm range. Last year was my rookie season in the streetbike world and the old´ slingshot was there to greet me with a wonderful scare. The old sporty lacked a bit of midrange but made up for it with the fierce horsepower hit found in the wonderful slingshot zone. The rush of power nearly gave me the ****s and made my 89´ CBR 600 look like the Suzuki´s little ****, it was quite pleasant. The advancement of the GSX-R over the years has left the poor slingshot far from the benchmark of today´s sportbikes, yet it still remains a capable machine that is well worth buying today. Sure the 02´ 750 outmuscles the old GSX-R in every measurable category but the slingshot is still wild enough to give you a nice dose of inline-four fanatics at nearly a 1/4 of the price of a new, makes cents to me.
