I own a Mk.II. disc braked JAWA 500R from 1991. The power output is actually 34 BHP @ 7,000 RPM from the ROTAX 504 engine in a period road test in a magazine. The Matchless G80 was only 27 BHP @ 6,000 RPM due to exaust and carburation differences. Spanish made AMAL (read ANAL) carb causes stalling problems when hot. Replace with 38 millimetre Mikuni from SR/XT500 bike and use same jets. Fuel consumption on Mikuni carb is 25 MPG in town as engine likes to be revved not chugged and 45 MPG open road. NIPON DENSO CDI can fail slowly as on Jap bikes giving no ignition over a certain number of revs as a symptom. Replace side panel ignition switch with an automotive relay controlled of the blue wire circuit. Mine runs a MICRON Europa Mk.II. performance exaust as opposed to the MICRON Europa Mk.I. exaust on earlier models. The JAWA 500R is the lightest 500cc production bike in the UK and the handling is extremely good when compared to the bulky XBR500 and SR500 competition. Race engine induction and exaust howl/roar from the ROTAX engine is classic to listen to. Top speed is 105 MPH on leaded four star and about 95 MPH on unleaded/super unleaded. Vast amounts of engine tuning goodies available plus body work and gas tanks to make a Manx Norton look alike. Andy. |
