What am I doing wrong with my stock SRX600 exhaust?

I have been trying to get my stock SRX600 exhaust fitted properly and quiet. I suspect I was sent the wrong exhaust gaskets for mating the front downpipes to the silencer section, as they are cylindrical fibre gaskets which fit over the end of the downpipes. There are copper bands onjust behind, which I previously thought went inside the fat silencer pipes. I tried clamping up the fibre gaskets, but the sealing and noise is as bad as ever. Can anyone explain the stock arrangement, what the proper gaskets look like, and how to get it sealed right, as I am going mad. Thanks Rob
