Carbon Canister Removal

I am the proud owner of a 1986 Yamaha XT 600. Have owned it now for about 16 years and have performed my own repair and maintenance as always. My question is this, how do I remove the carbon canister and not effect the way the bike runs? I tried this many years ago and plugged the inlet on the carb. Seems like that made it bog at higher rpm. I also have an XT 350 that the canister was removed with some \
