fuel reserve lever; which way is reserve?

Hi all. My 1100 ACE ran out of gas. Thankfully, it was in front of a gas station. I turned the gas lever to what I thought was the reserve position, but nothing happened. I went to the gas station and put in gas. I had the lever in the position that it was when it ran out of gas. The bike started. This made me wonder if I know the right positions. If you know, would you help me out? Thanks.
