The best answer, fill up every 100 miles. I have had my shadow for about 7 years now, when I bought it it was stock and yes it would get close to 40 mpg. Since then I have added a k&n air filter, cobra drag pipes and a dynojet stage 1 jet kit. That has drug down the mileage a bit but the power gains are absolutely amazing. Still, even with the upgrades, I have found that 100 miles is the safe and easy time to fill up. I have run mine out of gas as early as 115 miles on a tank,(I also ride my bike really hard a lot of times though). Hope that helps.
