Starter not connecting

Hi, I have an 84 GPz 750. It has served me well for nearly 10 years! I enjoy the old bike.
The starter has not been connecting lately, making a loud rattling noise. Eventually it connects and the bike starts. It sounds like the teeth on a gear is worn. Anybody experienced this? I´m afraid I´ll get stranded somewhere soon...
