Engine knock

I just bought my 1986 vf1100 Shadow. I had to replace the fuel pump and finally started the bike. It has a pretty loud knock that seems to be coming from the lower part of the motor on the right side. What could this possibly be and how do I fix it. I´m pretty mechanically inclined, but I´m not really comfortable tearing into the motor just yet. The noise is more of a knock than a tic.
