Had my XL600 for a bit and learned the trick... when I bought my bike, the guy who sold it had it running... after that, what a %&#!¤. Here´s my list of things I worked on and the outcome...
1) with old gas still in the tank (didn´t change gas till later on down), cleaned carbs... didn´t help
2) replaced the stator... didn´t help
3) put in fresh 92 octane, cleaned carbs again, put in new (used CDI)... fires right up... every time... no troubles.

I believe the problem was the CDI... I have yet to test the old one now that I know the carbs are cleaned out and I have fresh gas!

Further more, if the bike falls over while running or just sucks in too much gas (or you can tell its flooded by looking at the plug), the tried and true method for getting it started again is...
1) turn off the gas at the petcock,
2) drain the two carb bowls
3) with the compression lever pulled in, kick your xl600r over about 20 kicks (no problem with the release on)
4) turn the gas back on...
5) using your normal starting procedures (choke if cold, no choke if hot, or turn up the idle a turn or two if warm) give it a kick... starts first kick for me every time!

The Honda XL600r is second only to a street legal XR600r. Best of luck to ya.
