When cold, I give it full choke, start it up and cancel the choke stepwise (quite quickly, otherwise it stops). When already warm, I just start it, no dramas. Only ever give it throttle if it is only slightly warm, only a tiny bit and absolutely no choke. If your bike is giving you trouble, I´d say you need to have someone (qualified mechanic) take a look at the jetting.
