FZR1000 Stalls going uphill

Just bought a 1990 FZR1000 5 days ago. Runs great almost all the time but it has a problem stalling going uphill. If I keep the RPM above about 3,000 it runs just fine up any hill but if you start from a stop in the middle of the hill the only way to get it revving again is to turn around and head downhill. My repair manual is on the way but I wanted to see if anyone had any idea on what could be the cause. Thanks.
