The vx800 with its 805cc V twin, water cooled 5 speed shaft drive is a love or hate machine because of the oddities in design that effect the looks and characteristics of the bike. Its long wheel base is very good at anything over slow speed but it takes some getting used to at low speed and slow manouvering for parking takes some effort. The motor is very user friendly as it has been a reliable starter and has good pulling characteristics across the range but its gearing and power is well suited to overtaking,80 kph to 120 kph rather than rocket top speeds,I had it to 170 kph very briefly 2 up at 7,000 rpm,red is 8,500 which is pointless reaching as its power does not improve over 7,000 rpm,a 6th gear would have been great for cruising but 5th is on 4,300 rpm at 100 kph. The vx is an oddity to look at with a strong GSX look but the VS cruiser motor origin. The seating position is touring with an upright conventional bias, however the seat is okay but for long trips get a sheepskin or a corbin upgrade. The VX has reasonable handling from its suspension set up but it can be given dramatic improvement by an upgrade especially the front. The rear is okay but the seals may need replacing around 50k. The front end must be upgraded to progressive springs and needs at least 10w oil for 2 up as it dives under load. The brakes are okay but I am about to upgrade to sintered pads and stainless steel brakelines, as it needs extra power. Really given its weight )540lbs wet it should have had 2 disks. It suffers from the inherent suzuki tank problem of rusting,so check it out closely.Overall the vx is fun to ride with good acceleration, especially roll on performance which is quite quick for overtaking. The vx with shaftdrive low maintainance, is quiet and efficient and its economy is okay 5.5 to 6.5 l/100k.The motor is different to the volusia configuration in that it has dohc and higher power output. It is suited to mature riders who want a commuter/tourer that is a blast to take for a run through the hills but looks a bit different. The vx is hard to find as suzuki did little to market it, it sold poorly and its odd combination which I like, means it did not fit any niche market.Get one with as little k´s as possible and preferably with updated suspension/brake components. It should last for some high K´s but keep fresh oil upto it and monitor the water levels for cooling. However if you own one be prepared to explain it to your friends who won´t have heard of it. But that is an aspect that is part of its appeal, something different, love it or hate it.
