its restricted in the exhaust, electronically in the cdi, via the powervalve and via the low gearing. To destrict the exhaust, take it off and look for the restrictor washers welded over the end (where if goes to the engine). If you can cut the exhaust open you can remove the restrictor cone in the big bulge bit at the front. Or just fit a full Arrow Race system its much easier. To destrict the cdi, take it to a yamaha dealer and get them to remove the electronic restriction. You can tell if this has been done- if it won´t rev beyond 8,000 its still restricted. Once its been done properly you can rev it all the way right into the redline. To derestrict the powervalve, turn it thru 180 degrees and pin it in place make sure its at the fully open position so as much exhaust gasses can get out. You will loose a little acceleration but the top end will be WAY better. Another good mod is to change the old Yamaha steel reed to a Boysen one. It bends and flexes more. To change the gearing, swap the rear wheel sprocket from a 57 one to a 50 tooth one. Do this only after you have done all the other mods. Top speed will be 95mph at 10,000 rpm. If you stick with the stock sprocket top speed is 85mph at 10,000 rpm. |
