Checking Oil on Tenere

How do you check oil on Tenere. I checked the ´dip stick´ at the top of frame, there appeared to be no oil. I then drained the oil (from crankcase & frame). There was about 3 lts came out. I filled with oil 2.7 lts. Then checked ´dip stick´ again (the bike was level both warm & cold) & the stick is still dry. Can anyone help me?
