535 oil reading issues

535 oil reading issues

I am having trouble reading my oil level on my 535 S. I have found the little window but once the bike is vertical, what am I supposed to be looking for? Should the window be full of oil? Mine is. Also, sometimes my engine smells really hot even after short rides. Any suggestions on this?
