Hi all. I´m a proud owner of a 2000 VZ800 Marauder for just on 1 year now but have run into a technical problem. The battery stopped re-charging and my local diagnosed the problem to be my Regulator/Rectifier (the square aluminum finned gadget hiding underneath the frame directly beneath the crankcase/air filter chamber that turns the AC volts from the alternator into DC volts so the battery can recharge). Suzuki want nearly $300 for the replacement which I´m trying really hard not to wear. Surely there´s other avenues than being shafted price wise like this. So since this problem began I´ve completed an 8 week course on beginners motorcycle mechanics and sourced 3 reg/rec´s from a local wrecker. All of them so far are doing the same thing - overcharging & therefore eventually frying the battery. According to the course I did and the shop I took it to originally a multi meter should be reading @12-13 volts on the battery cold (no load) a little less than that once the ignition´s on and the dash lights & head light are on & no more than @ 13-15 volts once the engine´s been kicked over and the M.Meter´s reading what the alternators putting back via the Reg/Rec. But all 3 Reg/Rec´s are creating a reading of between 18 - 19 volts. Way too much for the battery. My course supervisor´s suggested it´s not earthed properly & to get a jumper lead, attach it directly from the fins on the reg/rec to the negative terminal of the battery (by passing the wiring should their be an earthing / continuity problem with it) which I´ve done but still getting too high readings on my multi meter!!! Running out of options here.... anyone had similar problems & got any advice?
