The best first motorcycle for anyone. |

I bought my first motorcycle in 1979 fresh out of a divorce. A dark green ´76 XS-650 and I loved it. Just a standard bike. Flat seat and round tires. I put 9600 miles on it that first year and can still remember my first speeding ticket (95 in a 55, memorial day weekend on I-65 just crossing out of Alabama into Tennesee. Tennesee trooper cut me a break to 79 so I didn´t have to wait to see the Judge on Tuesday). First breakdown, Niceville Florida heading to Panama city, 11:30 PM and all the lights cut out if I get over 25 mph (worn brushes). First new tires when I learned that MC tires are stored with a wax coating(slippery stuff) to prevent dryrot while on the shelf (didn´t even get out of the parking lot before it was down). Yes, this was definatly a first bike. There´ve been a number of bikes since then. Most have been faster and more refined but none has been as much fun. So much fun that last year when I found a wrecked one with a running motor I started looking for a rolling frame. And there in the garage sits a motor looking for a frame, A gas tank and right hand side panel looking for that left hand panel and some green paint, A freshly respoked front wheel with a brand new brake rotor. It´s slowly comming together and sometimes, when the world get too hectic and I´ve got to worry, how I´m going to send my kids to college, is my cholesterol to high, will I have a job tomorrow… I go down to that garage pick up a greasy rag and a wrench and suddenly, It´s 1979 again and my biggest worry whether it´s going to rain.
