Not at all. I´ve got the same model and year. Plugs have never been a problem for me, even with unleaded. Maybe it´s time to find a new mechanic. BTW- the primary problem with unleaded in an older (pre-1970 or so) motor is it wears the valves and valve seats. They need to be hardened to hold up with unleaded.
