When my neighbour across the street bought
one of these new in 1971 and he said take
her for a spin i thought all my xmases had
come at once!!

in 1971 even though i was still a hairy
arsed kid at school i had been riding an
array of bikes since i was about 13.But
nothing could have prepared me for the first time i rode the kwawka.I had been
mates with Bimbo Hutchison for a fair few
years before he got the Kwaka and he had
ridden Triumphs etc etc.One Saturday after
giving us a spectacular display on how to wheelstand the 500 on the street out the front of home he said take it out for a
spin.Mind you i was still shitting bricks after watching him wheelstanding this thing.Another mate Billy Robo lived about
6 miles out of town so i thought take it
out to show him The ride out was quick as there was a 2-3 mile straight and i had the kwaka up to a ton in no time as i turned in to Billys dirt driveway i made a promise to myself not to accelerate had unless i was in a sraight
line as the power band caused the arse
end to spin like nothing else!Billy was
totally blown away that here was a brand new Kawasaki 500 Mach 111 on his
place because him like me had only seen one in a magazine.Does it go hard¿ Billy asked. Get on!i said. Now Billys driveway was about a kilometer long and
as i turned on to it caution was thrown to the wind, i grabbed a hand full and redlined it in first and second even 2 up the bloody thing was spinning the rear wheel when i hit third at god knows what speed the end of the drive
was coming up fast!Bill was saying something like´faaaaaark´as he could see
i wasnt going to take the corner,of into the paddock we went, me hard on the anchors the next obstacle was about a 2 meter high mound of dirt that the shire had left behind that i couldnt miss so relying on some dirt bike experience i stood up on the pegs and
jumped the dirt.Billy fell of but wasnt hurt i somehow managed to land and stop the Kwaka and was anxiously examining
it for any signs of damage when Billy
came running up covered in dust and burrs he said shit that thing goes but it dont stop to good does it¿As i rode home i thought all the what iffs but a valuable lesson was learned and any big bike i rode after that was treated with respect.
