Review of the 2008 Suzuki Burgman 650:I´ve Had it Two Weeks Now |

After 40+ years of riding a motorcycle, tendon issues in my hands made pulling a clutch lever too difficult. Thus my transition to a Super Scooter. | ||||||
I purchased my Burgman with 11,400 miles on it from a dealership some 65 miles away. My ride home is my review. I´m 5´6´ with a 28´ inseam, weigh 150 lbs. My first 20 miles or so heading home were in heavy city traffic on a windy day. I found the 650 handled much quicker and lighter than I thought it would for the weight. A bit more even than my Suzuki Boulevard 800 I traded in. Dual disc brakes up front and a single in the back gave it plenty of stopping power. The CVT transmission was smooth and seamless in traffic. I thought I would miss shifting but after the first half dozen red lights with cars everywhere, it was a joy just to roll the throttle and go! I did find I can´t sit with both feet completely flat on the pavement, but close enough balance wasn´t an issue. The second leg of my ride home was maybe 35 miles of back roads. Finally I could get up some speed and even have a few sweeping turns. What a blast. The big Burgman handled beautifully and felt no more stressed at 55 mph than 20 in traffic. Handling was great and with the footwell on the scooter, found I could move my feet around several ways to stay comfortable. The extra speed and wind proved to be no issue at all with handling despite all the bodywork. Wind buffeting at the helmet was even less than on my Boulevard. I should note the prior owner put on an after market, tall Givi windshield. The last 15 miles or so were strictly highway including the interstate. The 650 buzzed easily to 75 mph with tons of room before red line. Rock steady despite the wind I didn´t even feel like I was doing 75. The only buffeting was from large semi´s passing - pretty normal for any bike. After I got home with her. Tons of storage under the seat with plenty of room for two full face helmets or one and a camera bag, or overnight bag. Three glove boxes in the dash hold gloves, cell phone, tire gauge and any number of other small items. Very handy with no bags needed! Personally I really like the looks though some may not. My wife called it ´futuristic looking´ when I pulled up. My trip from the dealer with all the mixed riding made around 50 mpg. The seat itself is pretty much like any stock seat. Not blissfully comfortable but certainly fine for a triple digit mileage trip. I´ve put a couple of hundred miles on her already and absolutely love it. Acceleration is more than enough leaving cars in your review mirror without even trying; handles like a much lighter bike and on the highway - it thinks it´s a long distance touring machine. If you have a chance to buy one of these Maxi Scooters, give the 650 Burgman a real close look. Close competitors include the Yamaha Majesty and the Honda Silverwing. Personally, I´m the proud owner of a Big Burg´! |
