So you want a motorcycle for the real world¿ Don´t want to scrunch up on a race replica¿ Take a look at Yamaha´s 2005 FZ1. It has the potential to give you every aspect of the motorcycling experience at a level to satisfy all but the most narrowly focused biker.

Let´s start from the moment you throw your leg over your next potential bike. Let´s also say it happens to be a Yamaha FZ1. The first thing you´ll notice is that it is a tall bike. You will have a good view in traffic. Vertically challenged riders may have difficulty placing their feet flat at a stop. Once you settle into the saddle you will notice that the riding position is very natural with comfortable ergonomics. The bike comes up off the kick stand with a lightness that belies its size. At over 500 lbs. wet, it is definitly not intended as a pure sport bike but it carries it well enough that you will never notice. Okay, what will you notice after you buy. First off, especially if you are moving up from a smaller cycle, you will notice the R1 derived motor. Be careful, things happen fast with that much power to the pavement. You can hold your own against most things on wheels. You will not out handle a well ridden sport bike or out tour a well appointed touring bike but you may suprise said company. The gauges are analog with the numbers a little too close together but it is easy to see your speed at a glance when you get used to where the numbers fall on the gauge. The bike is undersprung for heavier riders and you may want to remedy this if you ride aggressively. The fuel tank will take you over 200 miles if you run it almost dry. You´d have to be pretty far from anywhere for the reserve not to get you to a gas station. The bike is very smooth with various rubber appointments isolating you from the vibrations. The stock muffler is very quiet and very large. 2-up is reasonably comfortable provided you have the suspension set properly. You would benefit from an aftermarket seat if you plan to tour alot. The manufacturer sets the fuel mix very lean at off-idle to very rich at WOT. The lean low end generates a substantial amount of heat. A properly installed jet kit will remedy the heat on your legs and make the bike smooth and refined feeling. Lastly, you may notice much wind on you as you are riding. While this can be mitigated somewhat, it is part of the naked bike feel. The overall value of this bike may be underrated by many, but it offers big bike performance at the price of a small displacement race replica and does it with comfort and style. The looks aren´t for everyone but the bike will turn heads at a stoplight. | |
