Review of the 1978 Yamaha XS 1100:HEAVYWEIGHT CRUISER WITH WITH A PUNCH |

1978 Yamaha XS 1100. Greg Park.
FIRST YEAR PRODUCTION FOR YAMAHA´S 1100 C.C. ROAD CRUISER. | ||
YAMAHA INTRODUCED A NEW MODEL TO THE CRUISER CLASS FOR 1978. IT´S THE XS11. THE DESIGNATION,XS 1100, HAD A TWO-FOLD MEANING. OBVIOUSLY, ENGINE SIZE. SECONDLY, IT WAS EXPECTED TO COVER A 1/4 MILE IN ELEVEN SECONDS FROM A STANDING START. THAT IT DID, THE FIRST PRODUCTION BIKE EVER TO DO SO. THE IN-LINE FOUR CYLINDER IS SHAFT DRIVEN. TO THE RIDER, THIS MEANS SMOOTH TRAVELING AND LESS MAINTENANCE. DON´T BE FOOLED! UNLIKE ITS CLASSMATES, THIS HEAVYWEIGHT PACKS A PUNCH. HITTING THE POWERBAND AT 6000 RPM IS LIKE KICKING IN A 4-BARREL. IT IS NOT THE BEST CORNERING BIKE IN THE BUNCH AND THE TRANS MIGHT CLUNK INTO GEAR, BUT IT IS ´BEST IN CLASS.´ |
