The 1990 XLH was the last of the 4 speed evolution models. Had some good points and some bad. If you want trouble free motoring, look towards a 1991 up model XLH! | ||||||
These 4 speeds have a couple of weaknesses; the cam follower in the gearbox selector is a rubbishy bit of alloy and can snap sticking the bike in gear. The clutch shell and charging system are one and the same, the magnets can come off and ruin the stator, this is a VERY expensive fix. The oil tank has a weak spot where the battery box bolts to it causing a crack and a leak. The engines are very strong BUT be careful, mine threw the crank pin at 50,000mi and I have been told that this can be because the original tolerances in the crank were too big, causing rapid wear if they were at the outer edge. Good fun ride tho´, plenty of power and can withstand an increase in gear ratios from 48/21 to about 47/23 with little loss of acceleration and improved cruzing. |
