Review of the 2006 Vespa GTS 250 I.E.:The right choice |

I bought my red Vespa 250 GTS 4 months and 6,000 kms ago. I was lured by the long Vespa history, the fantastic Dragon Red colour and the 250 GTS promise of practicality. I wasn´t sure for a while, but now I am confident that I made the right choice. | ||||||
I have ridden motorbikes for 25 years but this is my first scooter. I balanced the lure of the 250 Vespa against the scooter image of teenagers on 50 cc machines who can´t keep up with the traffic and ride with that characteristic ´scooter-slump´ to reduce their surface area against the wind. But this scooter feels and goes like a ´real´ bike- or at least it does once you get used to the typically sharp scooter steering. I have always ridden trail and enduro bikes with the upright seating position and this scooter feels the same to ride. Riding along the road it is easy to slip into the thought that you are on a much larger and conventional machine, especially with the low screen I have. But then you are brought back to reality when you see another scooter rider and you realise what you really look like - yuk. But I was looking for a ride that is economical (I get 33 kms per litre or about 90 mpg), has plenty of storage (I put my full face helmet in the top-box and my jacket under the seat with plenty of room to spare), is highly visible to cars (Dragon Red with all that area - brilliant) and on which I could ride to work with good office clothes and sometimes a suit (no problem). On the road it accelerates and cruises up to 140 kms/hr effortlessly, corners and handles brilliantly (I have scraped the stand a few times) and is a constant surprise to car drivers. On the front row at the traffic lights (usually attained by lane-splitting) you can see the drivers behind you frustrated and thinking that here is another scooter they will have to pass. What a surprise, I have had a couple of drivers drag me off but the only ones who can keep up are the 250HP plus V8´s(what sort of bragging rights does that give them¿ Would they really tell their mates¿). Passing cars on the freeway at 140 have people pointing with their mouth wide open. And then there is the impression on the girls. All of my friends wives needed to go for a ride with me at first site. I haven´t lost any friends yet, but a couple who own Ducati´s were pretty peeved. I have to admit though, I am getting a bit tired of old ladies telling me how pretty it is. So now I don´t think so much about the image I may project. Scooters are the future with petrol prices the way they are, and that future is with scooters like the Vespa 250 GTS. |
