I purchased this bike 2 years ago so this review is late in coming but after 15,000 miles on the odo, here´s as complete of a review that I can give..... | ||||||
Most of my riding is commuter style. I live in LA so this is the best way to get around. my previous bike was an ´06 599. I decided to go for the 919 because of the larger displacement and the fuel injection. I looked at other bikes...the FZ1, which, side by side, looks absolutely HUGE compared to the 919 but the 919 just looks better. So far, I´ve taken this thing to SF and back 4 times. I couldn´t imagine doing this on a full fledged sport bike as the seating position is right between track bike and cruiser. Any more of a reach for the handlebars would have made trips like this impossible. Otherwise, sustained speeds of 100+ mph, though a little buzzy, is quite easy. Achieving 45+mpg is just icing on the cake. It´s got enough low end grunt to keep a wheelie through 3rd gear. I absolutely love this bike for cutting traffic. It´s not wide, the seat hight is perfect for my 5´5´ self, shift action is smooth, and with aftermarket carbon fiber cans, the sound is throaty enough to enjoy. The add ons have been a rear rack from renntech (best add on yet), the honda windscreen (more for looks), frame sliders, carbon cans, black plastic mirrors, the Honda centerstand (had to remove all emissions equipment to facilitate the add on)and a fender eliminator. The only problem I´ve experienced is a very slight (and I mean very slight) oil seepage from the head. The dealer said they would fix this next week when it gets the 16K mile service. The rear tire and brakes lasted an amazing 12,500 miles. The front will be replaced at the 16K service as well as the front brakes. The battery is original and has no signs of dying soon. I downed it once when i struck a pedestrian (stupid jay walking b*tch deserved the broken wrist she got) but the cost to repair the bike was less than Dollars 100 in parts. The downsides are: last year model for the US market. Analog gauges (The 599´s gauge cluster is digital and has a fuel tank read out). Slightly buzzy at 100+ mph, no centerstand option for CA models. No integrated helmet lock outside the seat. Resale value tanked after i drove it off the lot but fortunately, I paid Dollars 7,200 out the door so the deal was a deal indeed. |
