I turned 50, quit drinking and bought this as my first bike.

Here´s the beginner´s take. My best friend has 8 bikes (5 are scotters) and he thought I was crazy for getting something this big (I´m male, 5´ 8´ 165lbs and fit) for a first bike; he said go with a 250cc bike. Everybody else told me that a 250cc bike is better for a first timer but that I´d outgrow it; in about 3 days.

I´m really glad I got this bike. My only riding experience was the MSF training, and although the first couple of hours were somewhat harrowing (getting all the controls working properly together was a protracted thought process) once things got familiar I was already happy the bike was this big. The powerful, thumping take-offs in the low end of each gear are a real pleasure and whipping up through the gears when acceleration is key to staying safe is really rewarding.

This bike´s cruiser looks and solid feel make me glad every time I look at it and the whole time I´m on it. It´s a breeze to ride, turns great, shifting is easy especially with the Xv650A(T) model (which is what I have) which has footpads and a toe and heel shifter. I´m still finding the long wheel base makes slow tight turns difficult, but I´m a beginner and I hear that´s always awkward on any bike.

I watched craig´s list for about 3 weeks and found one with less than 500 miles for Dollars 3500. That was an exceptional deal and I suspect the standard wait for a deal that good is typically a lot longer.

If you´re a beginner, and buy this bike you won´t be sorry. In fact, you´ll be ecstatic.
