I picked up a GS550 with 14,000 miles on it in 2006. The bike had been sitting in someone´s garage for about 20 years, and a mechanic had rescued it...

The mechanic had cleaned out the carbs, etched the tank with acid and put on new tires.

The first season the bike was a little frustrating, as I had problems with the front brake and the front brake light indicator switch. However the front break and master cylinder was replaced by the mechanic and a front brake sensor replaced with one that sensed the front brake fluid pressure.

All in all the bike still rocks. The single disk front brake isn´t as powerful as a new bike´s dual front disks, however it is serviceable. Replacing the front brake line with a stainless braided line helped.

The bike still ´howls´ when opened wide up. It´s not real comfortable on the highway due to the wide bars (sail like a kite), but it´s a good back street cruiser.

I get some funny looks from peopel when they see the spoked wheels and kick start - this bike is starting to really look like an antique.

But it´s fun to ride and if you can get one in good shape that hasn´t sat around too long - you´ll enjoy it. I paid very little for the bike but realistically it´s a US Dollars 200-300 per year investment to keep the bike on the road.

Next year I´m replacing the points with electronic ignition (points are hard to replace).
