Not a First Bike

While this bike is a wonderful example of Yamaha´s continuing effort to achieve excellence, it is very sensitive and requires a good deal of riding maturity to master.

Before purchasing this bike in July of 04, I read all the reviews and played hell locating one in southern California. At first the bike seemed tight and the transmission was a nightmare, always having trouble getting back to first when stopped. I changed over to 20w50 full synthetic oil at 290 miles and things got much better. After the first 1,000 miles the bike started to come into its own. It started running much smoother and the transmission really started to jam once I learned that it liked to be up and downshifted from 1st through 6th and back again. The bike is a little rev machine that clearly enjoys being above 5,000 rpm.

I would not recommend this bike to a new rider or a rider with limited saddle time. While it is truly a gem to ride, its incredibly fast with a clutch, throttle and brake that require sensitive hands and a good deal of riding maturity as it will lift the front wheel in anything from 1st through 4th if you don´t know what you are doing. The bike handles very nicely and does quite well in bumper to bumper traffic for those who live in areas where lane splitting is still legal. On the open road, you will find the bike loves to cruise in the 80 mph range with little or know throttle movement. On thing is a certain fact, you can hit the leagl speed limit of 75 without ever having left 2nd gear and the brakes are so overpowering the bike can launch you over the front or into the gas tank should you crab the handle too hard or step on the brake lever with too much force. You can really tell the back brake has an oversized 245mm rear disc and it really doesn´t need it. All in all, I would highly recommend this bike to the seasoned sportbike rider looking for something a bit more comfortable as the handlebars move you up roughly 3 inches from the standard sportbike riding position. On a scale of 1 to 10, this bike gets a solid 9.
