The Gsx 1100es is a very easy bike to ride for its size and handles well, the fairings have a tendancy to crack and at this age you best to avoid dirt road as mine developed another three hair cracks due to a 15km off road trip.

I recently completed a 5 day 3000 km trip on the 1986 gsx 1135 es, my findings were as follows. The bike cruised comfortably at 105 kph on the speedo, but I feel the speedo and mileage counter under reads slightly ,(10%), and the trip meter is definitely under reading, (15%). Fuel consumption was 17 km per litre,(measured according to road information sign not trip meter) running a lazered 34 tooth 630 pitch rear sprocket and a 15 tooth front. The original sprocket is a 42 tooth. The chain does clear the swing arm okay but you need to drop the suspension down quite a bit at the back. I tensioned the chain every 1000 km. Oil consumption is about 750ml per 1000kms using a cheap 20w50 car oil. The bike does not smoke and has done 61000km. I bought it at 56000 and change oil at every 3000km. The bike ran well and despite the tall gearing it was still able to accelerate up hills and the bike felt very settled. My left shoulder developed a nasty ache, but I was also carrying a bag on my back, and my inner thighs took a hammering, but my bum didn´t get sore like it would on a cruiser over this distance. The bike is quite comfortable, but the fairing vibrates rendering the mirrors useless. I also found that my hands developed a tingle when I didn´t carry the bag on my back. The bag must pull one back from the bars taking weight off one´s palms. While we´re on the subject I wound the springs that tension the throttle cable on the carburettor back a turn, as the throttle was very difficult to pull and that helped the sore palms problem quite a bit as my right hand was tiring quickly before. I own a VS 1400 and have completed a similar distance on that bike, and the 1400 is a bit more comfortable. I would say to beat this bike properly in comfort whilst staying in the size bracket, you would need to spend some serious money and buy a bike like the DL 1000. | |
