11 years old and riding something other than a taco minibike, and loving every minute of it. | ||||||
The Kawasaki 100cc enduro, model G5. Eleven horse power, rotary valve induction, auto oil mix and five gears, all up! What more could an eleven year old want¿ It was the summer of 1973, in a small town in Northern California that I discovered that I wanted something bigger than my little Taco mini bike. I was, like most other kids, struggling with my grades, and didn´t really have any way of getting that cool new bike. It was just a dream at that point. Dad told me that the neighborhood paper boy was giving up his route, and that if I really wanted that bike, I had better find a way to earn some money. Then he surprised me in saying that if I brought my grades up to an acceptable level, and earned at least half the price of the bike, he would match me dollar for dollar. To make a long story a little shorter, that G5 100 cost Dollars 363.00 out the door. I earned the half way mark throwing papers and washing cars, brought my grades up to a ´B´ average (a new high for me), and the bike was mine. Many memories of that little 100, and quite a few varied bikes between then and now, but that was my first, and one I won´t soon forget. |
