Review of the 1976 Triumph T 140 V Tiger:BEST TRIUMPH TWIN ENGINE EVER BUILT UP TO ´83 |
Author: Robert H. Baucom, 2007-12-29, viewed 196 times.
I concur with Mr. Bonneville, the late Jack Wilson, in his evaluation of the 1976 twin engine. It was the most skillfully assembled, correctly balanced, smoothest running, verticle twin ever built by Triumph up to 1983.
Much more pleasing to the eye than the later day crotch rockets; though I much prefer the ´68 to ´70 model’s frame, fuel tank, oil tank and battery cover. This is a good solid motorcycle, with a high ´fun factor´ and a wonderful exhaust note. The single carburetor rather than the duel setup is vastly more trouble free for street application. The center of gravity is higher than the ´68 to ´70 but it still handles better than any Japanese bikes of that era. The disk front brake is more than adequate though the disk rear is superfluous. Engine Parts, accessories and performance goodies are as plentiful and easily obtained as a small block Chevrolet. I recommend replacing the Lucas points and condenser ignition with a Boyer Solid State or even better yet, with an ARD Solid State Magneto unit that fits in the same place while replacing the point plate and cover (If you have the money and the patience to wait three or four months for delivery). Both my son´s and the old man´s engines have the ARD unit and the Tony Hayward Belt drive primary. The engine is easy to work on - except setting the tappet clearance tests your patience and replacing the countershaft sprocket is a MAJOR ordeal. For this reason: SMART Triumph owners always run a HIGH QUALITY chain and LUBE IT religiously. If you plan to run the bike hard, get an oil cooler with a thermostat. The oil in frame models hold too little oil for WFO applications. |
